The 5 hindrances are the energetic disturbances that arise in the mind and stir up stress, tension and suffering. They occur naturally for all human beings, and they move us like puppets on strings. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that these 5 mental harassments move companies, nations and the very course of human history.
In this course, you will learn how to skillfully work with the emotions and thoughts that entangle, obstruct, and harass the mind. In doing so, you will take a fundamental step towards a radical freedom from pain, both mental and physical. As we defeat the hindrances within ourselves, we uncover an innate, joyful wellness, waiting to burst forth and lighten up our lives.
What to Expect
This course on the five hindrances is designed to help you move beyond what’s holding you back.
In each of six live online classes, Ranga will offer insight on the five hindrances, and practical advice on how to move past them. He’ll cover one hindrance each week to help you progressively build your understanding:
Week 1: Overview and orientation to all five hindrances
Week 2: Lacking, scarcity, poverty, unskillful desire
Week 3: Aversion, anger, judgment, blaming
Week 4: Dullness, fatigue, depression
Week 5: Restlessness, overthinking, worry
Week 6: Paralytic doubt, procrastination, anxiety
Your course enrollment includes the full series of 6 online classes, Wednesdays September 20th - October 25th, 10-11am PDT / 1-2pm EDT. These classes are designed to build on each other, deepening your understanding of the five hindrances over time. Each class includes: a brief guided meditation; a talk from Ranga on that week’s hindrance; and discussion/Q&A.
If the days and times for the course sessions don’t work for you, you can still join! We’ll send you the recordings of each part of the program the day after it’s held, so you can follow along at a time that works better for you.
“This practice gave me a place to cultivate stillness, consistency and strength.”
Your Teacher
Ranga Jayawardena sees meditation as playing with perception. We can learn how to adjust perception, and therefore experience, towards more enjoyment, strength and freedom.
He began his training with formal meditation practice at age 10, and has been on a journey of discovery ever since. After years of climbing the corporate ladder and later co-founding startups, he has shifted his career towards sharing his enthusiastic approach to meditation practice.
Ranga's teaching style entails bringing the ancient wisdom of the Buddha to the modern ear, through personal stories and contemporary similes. Rather than offering a singular, rigid view, he believes that we each hold the authority to find our authentic path in life and to deeply free ourselves up from worrying, anger, doubt, dullness and a sense of lacking. As such, he approaches his role as a teacher with an open heart; open to all the particularities, experiences and uniqueness of each student.
He draws on over 20 years of meditation practice and a lifetime of learning from Buddhist (and a few Daoist) meditation masters to guide friends on their personal journeys towards what they yearn for.
“I owe my progress in meditation and my growing spirituality and faith in myself to...Ranga.”
